The Development Process
The development process will vary, depending on what your requirements, goals and budget dictate. The more complex the design, the deeper the process may become. In general, the process is as follows:
-
Define the purpose and scope of web site.
- Define the intended audience/user group as well as knowledge level.
- Define whether the site is to be used internally or externally.
- Lay out the site map (topics and flow).
- Identify existing graphics, photos and/or text to be used within web site.
- Identify new graphics, photos and/or text needed for web site.
- Design web site.
- Review web site and identify needed changes and enhancements.
- Make changes.
- Re-review.
- Post (upload) web site to host server (operational server).
- Test web site on the operational server.
- Invite customers / users to use web site.
The process above is straight forward, as long as you have a sound idea of what you want to accomplish on your web site. If you need to post data from a database or provide the capability whereas users enter information into the web site (into the database), then the process will become longer and more complex, as the database needs to be designed and the web interface coded to allow for the entry and display of data from your database. The Database Back Ends section below provides more information on including a back-end database in your web site design.
